How do I search for an image?

Go to the Search box on the left-hand side of our homepage. In the space provided, enter a word or words that you think describe what you’re looking for. These words can either describe ‘objects’ or ‘concepts’.
Searching by 'object'spacer If you really know what you want (a red apple) just enter ‘red apple’ in the search box, and you’ll be rewarded with as many shots of red apples as we’ve got. Or you can conduct a wider search by entering keywords such as ‘apple’ or ‘fruit’ or ‘food’. It’s up to you.
Searching by 'concept'spacer Let’s say you’re looking for an image that suggests wealth. Enter ‘wealth’ into the search box, and you’ll get images of everything from huge piles of money, to fat cigars. Or maybe you want a whole lot of red things. Enter 'red' and you'll get everything from red traffic lights to red wine.
Searching by image numberspacer Every image in our catalogue has its own number, which you can enter into the Search box if you want to retrieve that particular image.

How do I purchase an image?

You can’t purchase until you register or, if you’ve already registered another time, sign in. As a registered user, you can add images to your shopping cart at any time, or you can decide to put potential purchases in your job bag, and search some more before going to your shopping cart to purchase.spacerRegister me now!
Assuming you've registered and activated your account, here’s how it works. Once you’ve found the image you’re looking for, simply click the ‘add to cart’ link below the image. The image will then be placed in your shopping cart and you will automatically be taken to the shopping cart page. If you want to buy more than one image, click on the link on the shopping cart page to take you back to where you were.
When you’re done, you can proceed directly to the ‘checkout’, where you can pay for your images. Then it’s just a matter of downloading them.

How do I download an image?

Once you’ve finalised your online payment, you’ll be automatically directed to the downloads page. There’ll be onscreen instructions to make it nice and simple, but here’s pretty much how it works:
Mac Internet Explorer usersspacer Control click on the image and select the 'Download Image to Disk' option. Then simply select where on your computer you want to save the image.
Mac Safari usersspacer Control click on the image and then select the 'Download Image As' option. You can then select where you want to save the image on your computer.
Windows usersspacer Right click on the image, then select the ‘Save Picture As' option. Save your image to your destination of choice, then open it in whatever program you wish. You can also just click the image and open it in your browser, but this is probably going to slow down your machine.

I registered but it's not working - I can't sign in!

New registrations have to be activated before you can purchase or download a comping image. (This is a security feature which helps protect against anyone using a false address to log in.) spacer
After you register, your nominated email address is sent an automatically-generated email which tells you how to activate your account. You should receive this within a few seconds of completing the registration.spacerSometimes servers or spam filters are a bit over-zealous and block this email. We regularly check our system, and if this happens we'll manually activate your account (as long as your email address checks out). spacerSo, if this happens to you, and you want to get a comping image or buy right away, best to contact us atspacer
support@simplestockshots.comspacer and we'll fix things up.

What’s a shopping cart?

A shopping cart is where you store images when you’ve made the decision to buy them. Please note that putting an image in the shopping cart in no way obligates you to purchase. Only registered users have access to the shopping cart. spacerRegister me now!

What’s a job bag?

A job bag is like a personal folder on our site, where you can store any image you like, for future reference. That way, you can shortlist a dozen or so images, then come back to them at a later date without having to search all over again. You can open up to 20 job bags if you like. But only registered users can create job bags. spacerRegister now!

How long does it take for the image to download?

How long’s a piece of string? Really, it depends on whether you’ve selected a low-res or a high-res image, whether you’re on dial-up or ISDN. Here at simple stock shots we compress the image files to keep downloading nice and simple. Compressed, our high-res images are 3MB and our low-res ones are a mere 200 KB. So for most of you, download times will be pretty fast.

Once I’ve ordered, how long do I have to download the image?

You have 12 months to download the image from the time you buy it. Once you’ve downloaded an image, you can return to your My Account page and download it again until your 12 months are up.

What if I’m having trouble downloading an image?

If for some reason you fail to download, do not try to re-purchase the image. Just roll over spacerMy Accountspacerand select ‘your previous orders’. Then try again. If it still isn’t working, the chances are you may be having trouble at your end, so your next step is to talk to your IT people, if you have them. Or investigate yourself, if you don't.
If you’re still having no luck, you’d better contact us straight away at

I'm having trouble getting the downloaded image into Photoshop - any suggestions?
We've found that some quirky things can happen when dragging images from within a browser window into Photoshop. They usually relate to your browser and your version of the Photoshop software.
If you are a Mac user, we recommend saving the downloaded image file to your desktop, then dragging it directly into Photoshop from your desktop.

What file sizes are your images available in?

To keep it simple, all our images come in two resolutions: high-resolution (35MB) for best-quality reproduction in printed material, and low-resolution (1MB) for web use. The actual file size depends on the shot itself. As a general rule, the smaller and less detailed the object, the smaller the file size will be. However, files are compressed for the quickest possible download time.

How large can I print your images?

High resolutionspacer Our high-res images are supplied as 35MB RGB jpeg files. Perfect reproductions can be achieved at 11inches x 11inches (30cm x 30cm). What this means in plain English is that all our high-res images are perfectly suitable for high-end use, including printed material, magazine and press advertisements and large-scale billboards.
Low resolutionspacerThese images are supplied as 1MB RGB jpeg files, and are designed for web use only. If you try to print them at larger sizes they’ll be grainy and fuzzy and not at all attractive.

Are all your images royalty-free?

Yep.

Great. So what does royalty-free mean, exactly?

Royalty-free means that you pay for the image once, and once only. After that, you’re free to use it multiple times for multiple projects without ever paying additional fees or royalties. The finer details of the purchase agreement can be found in ourspacerTerms and Conditionsspacer, so if you’re into legalities, you know where to click.

Do you offer free comping images?

Yes, we do. But we prefer to offer them to users who are already known to us, therefore this service is available to our Registered Users only. If you have registered with us, all you need to do is sign in, and then when you click on an image detail, you will have an option which says 'Download Comp Image'. spacerRegister me now!
